I Want to Be a Clone

Image
I know this world is temporal, and some day we will enter into eternity, finally realizing the scope of the beauty, variety, love and peace that it entails. Still, I can’t stop thinking about how much more can be done here on earth before then.   We were all called to be His workmanship, to do good works in Christ, to spread the good news of Jesus Christ, to help the poor, to be creative, to laugh, to learn…. To deepen .     I am a "doer", and with that I so often wish that I could do and experience everything.   I have come to realize that most people end up doing nothing, paralyzed by either trying to do too much, or fearing that they have chosen poorly.   Since taking some time to play golf last month, the world has opened up many new and expanded opportunities.   I figure I have 15 more productive years on the Hobbs meter before the Lord is done with me.   But what does He want that to look like, and am I willing to let Him shape that? ...

I'm Going Golfing

Image
When I was a young man growing up I had the privilege of living in Calgary Alberta.   From April to October I could be found working at the golf course cleaning clubs in the morning and late at night so I could play as much golf as humanly possible in the middle.   Several times in my life I completed   5 rounds in a day when I did not have to work.   It was a possible career, it was my social net, it was the reason I got up in the morning.   Golf in fact was one of my gods.   But that all changed when I began my journey with Christ.   My time for golf was exchanged for time helping at the church, investing in others’ lives, and a plethora of other activities new to my world.   Instead, golf was still important, but the focus had changed drastically from a game of passion… to a time to be still and know that He is God.   As I waddle around next week in Wales not much will have changed after 35 years of serving Him.   There is s...

The Opposite of Insanity

Image
The moment my blog went out stating that ‘insanity is repeating the same action and expecting a different result’, I was chastised by a few that this in fact is not the real definition.   Instead it is the inability to identify right from wrong.   But my question is what is the opposite of insanity?   Opposite.com has stated that; Clearness, good sense, lucidity, rationality and sanity are the correct translation.   Oh to live in a world that is not insane.   Recently a picture of the school we built popped up on Facebook.   Valencia, the woman in charge of the facility has gone from strength to strength feeding up to 1000 people a day from the humble collection of shipping placed there by a group of teenagers.   I am proud to be associated with this school, I am proud of the work accomplished by the youth, and I am proud at the way this simple project has changed the lives of teens in the UK and in Canada.   It is nice to work against a lit...

Cape Town 2014 Review

Africa 2014 Photo Gallery Just over 50 young people and adults made the pilgrimage to the Khayelitsha informal settlement this year for the YMP spring trip.   ( Click for Photo Gallery of trip ) Though this was the smallest group we have taken in some time, the group made up from Wales and Canada buckled down to help expand a   1400 sq/ft pre-school for 160 kids to over 5000 sq/ft in just 2 weeks.   With some help from local Cape Town businesses, The Power group and Johnson cranes, along with support from the DOCKS church in Mitchell’s plain, the project allowed young people to learn new skills and that they can make a difference in the world they live in.    We must always remember that we go on trips of this nature not to entertain youth, but to inspire them to the possibility of what they can do if they put their mind to it.   The answer is that youth (and adults) can do most anything if their heart is in it.   Often day one i...

The Problem with ‘Neutral’

Image
‘Christianity is not the absence of sin, but the fullness of life’.   It is a modification of John 10:10, where Christ is quoted, ‘I have come to give you life and life abundantly’.    For years this has been my mantra, to understand the sovereignty of God and to get on with stepping out in faith.   Recently I heard the catch phrase, ‘If you are saved you serve’.   And I must admit that I liked this… I liked it a lot.   Fullness of life is found in the reality of moments, in which we are present and choose to embrace those around us and reach beyond our circle to express love and support. Nothing more, nothing less than harvesting the opportunities before us on a moment by moment basis through serving with the gifts that God has given us. It is in this focus on others we find Joy, and not wanting to be cheesy, remembering that JOY is spelt Jesus, Others, and then You…. But what happens to us if we do not engage ?   People do not go out and b...

Back to Africa: Thinking outside of the box

Khayelitsha School Build Project 2014   Click to see Extreme Build planned for this School Another international cast will be traveling for the first time from Canada, Wales and South Africa to the Khayelitsha informal settlement of 1.4 million people on the Mitchell plain just out of Cape Town.  Our project this year is to convert a small building servicing 80+ children into a school similar to the Lehae site of 2012 in Johannesburg ( click to see build plans )  The cost of the project is just under $40,000.00  (£25,000.00) to provide the space needed to support 300 children in the main auditorium with kitchen and bathroom facilities. A Project Inside of the Project.  (A very creative idea) Working with several international charities Northmount Baptist Church in Calgary is filling a 20’ shipping container with new school supplies and children’s equipment (or new condition) to send to Cape Town.  The goods will then be distributed by the ...

Passion Vs. Routine

A Good Chance to Visit (Back in Canada!) Through a gift from my sister and a friend in the US, it is going to be possible to take the whole family home this February to western Canada for 5 weeks from Feb 1 to March 6 th .   We really want to connect with as a many people as possible, some of you we have already started to try to organize dates.   So if you want to see us for any extended time, or if you have a group of friends that you feel we should get together with, please send us an email or Facebook message.   We have chosen not to have formal dates to get together this year as important relationships are hard to build on at these events.   Instead we are planning on using more of our time face to face.   Below are a rough list of dates we will be in various cities.   If it doesn’t fit exactly let me know as we can still change them a few days either way to accommodate. Feb 1 to Feb 4        Calgary Feb 5...
