All Times are His Season

Image
All times are his season, the fruit of his hand. His mercy lie waiting in the son of man.... Way back in the 80's, new to the Christian faith I was still wondering, 'Lord What', 'Lord When' and 'Lord How', do you want me to spread this amazing gift of salvation. Like any young believer I was anxious to get on with this adventure and make my mark for Him on my new world of colour.   But, as the years pass by we develop an understanding that is not about the rush of youthful energy quite so much as it is about learning to wait on Him to guide us into the next seasons of life.   That HE must become more and I must become less rings true in scripture and in all believer’s lives.   Pouring our lives out as a fragrant offering as Paul talked about, ready to go anywhere, any-time as a bond servant of the most high God.   Not rushed, but with a 'relaxed concern' as Frank Tillipaugh talked about in the mid 80's.   I believe that God has now brou...

PART 1 of 1: Why Are We Still Using Hammers and Nails?

Image
PART 1 of  2 Over 20 years ago Stephen Covey in his book the 7 habits of highly effective people stated that if your life is a hammer you will see everything in life is a nail.  In all my travels I must admit that this has proven true.... If you are an engineer    ...you see everything as a structural problem If your pastor                 ....everything is a problem of the heart If you living in a Township           .... you see everything with a survival instinct, living day to day with no thought of the day after tomorrow...  Each of these views has been shaped by life experience via education environment and peers creating a specific truth... but then again…what is truth...   In order to see truth we must intentionally remove ourselves from the biases we live for example:   Over my past 3 months in Africa I ...

Trust

Image
TRUST This (Proverbs 3:5,6) was one of the first verses I committed to memory as a young Christian.   It summed up just about everything I believed in according to my new found faith …. The whole nature of becoming a bond servant of Christ and the need to jump spiritually and say "How High?" and "W hat direction God?" on the way up.   This may seem unorthodox to most in our intellectually conservative world, but it is what the nature of obedience to the Holy Spirit is all about.   And it is how I have chosen to live life. So with this philosophy intact, I sit in a 1 bedroom flat 900m from the 2015 YMP project.   Listening through the night to the grumblings of a community faced with Xenophobic threats and uprisings that are growing due to outside sources…   At the same time I am trying to clean off my suit to meet with the Lesotho education minster about containerized schools while sitting in coveralls as I plan to try my had on some w...

Planes, Cranes and Just About Every Other Type of Automobile

Image
Click for more pictures and info   November has found me in a rural community just outside of Mtwapa Kenya.   The goats here out number the white residence about 100 to 1.   I am here with the Hope for the Nations charity, to build the two story residence for women wanting to break free from the streets and prostitution.   It is a beautiful community, quiet and just a little away from it all so it seems.   This is in contrast to the constant traffic jam that makes up the main roads through and to Mtwapa from Mombassa.   An 8 mile journey that should take 20 minutes but often is well over 1 hr at best.   The street is peppered with somewhat abandoned hotel builds for the European tourist trade, now left empty due to the recent rash of terrorism in the area.   This is unfortunate as the friendliness of the majority of the people rivals that of our dear friends in South Africa .   They do not have much, but are willing to help to...

I Want to Be a Clone

Image
I know this world is temporal, and some day we will enter into eternity, finally realizing the scope of the beauty, variety, love and peace that it entails. Still, I can’t stop thinking about how much more can be done here on earth before then.   We were all called to be His workmanship, to do good works in Christ, to spread the good news of Jesus Christ, to help the poor, to be creative, to laugh, to learn…. To deepen .     I am a "doer", and with that I so often wish that I could do and experience everything.   I have come to realize that most people end up doing nothing, paralyzed by either trying to do too much, or fearing that they have chosen poorly.   Since taking some time to play golf last month, the world has opened up many new and expanded opportunities.   I figure I have 15 more productive years on the Hobbs meter before the Lord is done with me.   But what does He want that to look like, and am I willing to let Him shape that? ...

Cape Town 2014 Review

Image
Africa 2014 Photo Gallery Just over 50 young people and adults made the pilgrimage to the Khayelitsha informal settlement this year for the YMP spring trip.   ( Click for Photo Gallery of trip ) Though this was the smallest group we have taken in some time, the group made up from Wales and Canada buckled down to help expand a   1400 sq/ft pre-school for 160 kids to over 5000 sq/ft in just 2 weeks.   With some help from local Cape Town businesses, The Power group and Johnson cranes, along with support from the DOCKS church in Mitchell’s plain, the project allowed young people to learn new skills and that they can make a difference in the world they live in.    We must always remember that we go on trips of this nature not to entertain youth, but to inspire them to the possibility of what they can do if they put their mind to it.   The answer is that youth (and adults) can do most anything if their heart is in it.   Often day one i...

The Problem with ‘Neutral’

Image
‘Christianity is not the absence of sin, but the fullness of life’.   It is a modification of John 10:10, where Christ is quoted, ‘I have come to give you life and life abundantly’.    For years this has been my mantra, to understand the sovereignty of God and to get on with stepping out in faith.   Recently I heard the catch phrase, ‘If you are saved you serve’.   And I must admit that I liked this… I liked it a lot.   Fullness of life is found in the reality of moments, in which we are present and choose to embrace those around us and reach beyond our circle to express love and support. Nothing more, nothing less than harvesting the opportunities before us on a moment by moment basis through serving with the gifts that God has given us. It is in this focus on others we find Joy, and not wanting to be cheesy, remembering that JOY is spelt Jesus, Others, and then You…. But what happens to us if we do not engage ?   People do not go out and b...
