Tour with a Difference

Image
I always stand amazed at the privilege it is to do the things that I do... April 11 to 27 was no exception, having 83 young people and adults travel to Johannesburg SA to; • Feed the poor • Build relief housing • Attend Super 15 Rugby in Loftus Park • Play the Blue Bull’s from Pretoria • AND here the good news of Jesus Christ. (see video & photo galleries) Jesus said that He came that we might have life, and have it abundantly. This April was a season of abundance for all those who attended. And NO, it was not easy, it was hard. Sleeping in camping facilities with cold showers, sometimes in the rain, mixing concrete by hand, filling in a 250m long trench and putting in 12 hour days... But the group LOVED it.. why.. They were building memories, living life and doing so much more than existing. Jim Rayburn used to say. “It is a sin to bore a kid with the gospel”. Often I believe that we have taken this saying out of context, focusing on creating ‘fun’. I believe it is n...

Over the Hill?

Image
YES. Thanks to the donations from partners in Canada and the USA, we will have a chance after 4 years to finally move over the hill and set the camp in Middle Park. The property will not be ‘finished’ like most of my friends would understand a YL property to be like. But it will be functional. It will not be ‘polished’, but it will be presentable, it won’t be elaborate, but it will set a standard for excellence in camping under canvas. AND it won’t be expensive, but be remarkably easy to attend as are many of the youth we work with are from middle to lower middle class families. Younglife is about presenting the gospel to youth in their world... Wales is not England, it is a rural hard working culture that needs Jesus incarnationally..

The work continues to grow

Image
In the past 4 years the scope and the depth of the YL work in Wales continues to grow.   Thank you for making this work possible by freeing up resources to allow full time staff supervision, mission trips, camp development and time to be with kids.   2010 saw $32,000.00 of support come from Canada and the USA.   These resources have been distributed to start new works and provide infrastructure for the growing work... I can not say thank you enough for the difference you are making in this world..       In Canada Make cheques payable to: Trinity Foundation - 1905 Springfield Rd, Kelowna BC, V1Y 7V7 Please note account on cheque: YL27 Online: Canada helps - KELOWNA TRINITY BAPTIST CHURCH LEGACY FOUNDATION http://www.canadahelps.org/CharityProfilePage.aspx?CharityID=s92672 Please note account on note field: YL27

The Calm Before the Storm

Image
Some days I feel like a duck. Life is not about the apparent calm on the surface, but is often more about my feet travelling at 5000 rpm under the surface. For years I have found ministry in February/March like this. There are solid relationships established between the volunteers & youth, ‘programs’ are running down as the spring sun beckons kids to the outdoors along with the pressure of school work as exams approach and they become a little more focused on studying. This creates an artificial ‘calm’ bringing with it a chance to organize the overseas mission and summer camps. Some of the most needed creative ideas occur during this season. This year as we prepare to use the middle park facility for the first time, on top of a new camp layout, water, sewer and electrical issues, we must also grapple with including; an inflatable blob tower and waterslide, a kart track over existing trails, all to allow the same quality of camp experiences received by Canadian and American youth...

Africa 2011

Image
By the time you receive this newsletter we will be within days of returning to South Africa with a group of 84 youth and adults in tow. Most have never been in a church, done anything for God, or understand the freeing message of the gospel of Jesus Christ. They are scared, apprehensive, but excited to embrace life as they will be feeding the poor, building a nursery and a house. And for 30 of them, the COBRA team, they will also embrace the sport that they love...Rugby. COBRA will be playing 4 local teams in the community via the WRU and the SARU to add to their experience. Talking with the coach of the COBRA under 19’s, Darren Mayor, who also works with Young Life stated that he cannot believe the way that the team has come together because of this event. There is a ‘unity’ that is even translating to a move up the tables. It is funny how helping others brings unity to a group. This is why for years as a minister, I have suggested that every church and every church member should at...

Nov/Dec 2010 Update

RDP housing trip Report......IT WORKED! It is not very often when a dream comes so close to a reality. The RDP house which has been built and rebuilt in our minds many times since 2005 exceeded all our expectation. The new 2 part polyurethane spray made immediate and noticeable effects on the thermal properties of these containers, turning these crates from a steel shack to a home in literally minutes. Thank you to all those who helped us lay the groundwork for this new ministry in South Africa! We believe in the next year this alternative modular housing might make huge changes to the lives of those waiting for a home in the townships of South Africa and beyond. What’s Next? This prototype house will now be used by the 1in1out charity to show government officials what is possible using new techniques and technology. You can describe things to people, but unless you can touch it and experience it, it remains no more than a concept. If this structure (which will be used as part...

Summer 2010 Update

Camp, Camp, And More Camp! I would estimate that just over 6000 volunteer hours were used in setting up and taking down marquees and tents this summer! SPREE Wales saw just over 600 participants the July 2-4th weekend! Caerwys camp had over 100 participants focusing on primary school kids. While the Young Life/ Wild Life camps peaked just over 200 on the Powis Show grounds. Add this up with the other Young Life camp at the Pioneer Centre, Kidderminster and camp numbers are definitely on the rise. Every Year we ask the same questions as our arms and legs are fatigued during the epic adventures that are camp setup & take down, ‘ Is this really worth it?’ And no matter how we look at it the answer is always YES! One week of camp still remains the equivalent of one year of relational development for kids and their leaders; and for service crew over one year of character development as they serve in everything from sit down meals, to cleaning the toilet, to basic construction and le...
