An Intervening Hope

I Recently had the privilege of being a guest of the NHS in Wales. I had surgery to repair an injury sustained last year while in South Africa. (They are re-attaching my bicep). Since leaving full time church ministry to work primarily with youth, I have not had many occasions to visit a hospital recovery unit. I had forgotten that overall, the age of the nation is getting older and the occupied beds at NHS accurately reflect that trend.

The real eye opener...
The thing that takes me aback however, is the stark entrenchment of people's demeanor. Those who have hope seem relaxed and empowered.... Those without hope seem even more hopeless. In college I remember studying Erickson’s psycho-social stages of development and the final stage being intimacy vs. isolation. My visit and surgery has driven home the point of how important the things we do with youth are. Yes, definitely for their eternity, but also for their life here and now. I believe that the experiences we have in our adolescent lives shape us for the rest of our lives…. Jesus said, 'I have come that you might have life, and that life will be abundant'.

What we do- give hope, direction, laughter and love to kids- is so, so important. May we always err on reaching out to more and more youth with an urgency found in looking at their future without Christ.

The start of a New Year.

Camps and mission trips are cherries on top of what we do. They have a lot of flash and a wow factor that help people see that- Yes, Christians are normal, can have some amazing fun, and can do amazing things with their lives to help others, BUT the crown jewel in what we do is day to day, life on life, friendships and relationships.

At the start of the new school year it is important to have staff and volunteers in place to make a difference in the lives of teens. 2012 is no different, and we are always trying to reach more and more teens with the good news of Christ. Therefore this year I am trying to raise $50,000 as seed money for new staff and developing current staff. Once Young Life is established in a community, we find the community will carry the vision. Still, we need to break new ground, invest and risk with new staff to see the scope of the work with kids grow.

Talking with Steve Thomas at 1in1out, he is over the moon to report that the bakery is up and running, providing a nutrition loaf to over 500 children a day.

The nursery is finished and waiting for final government approval to open in the next semester. So all us very well and on schedule. This has led us to up our game with a new project for 2012, we are going to TRY to build a school in 4 days this year.

Believe it or not, it is not the building in 4 days that will be the issue, but the cost of the 6 shipping containers that will be needed for the project that is the rub. The participants all invest $175.00 towards building materials. This covers the cost of the roof and 2 containers. We need help to purchase the additional 4 Containers for the April trip.
